Creamy Sugar-Free Keto Mexican Hot Chocolate
Do you miss hot chocolate on the keto diet? What about Mexican hot chocolate. Sigh…me too. Or at least, I did until I decided that was enough of that and created this recipe for sugar-free keto Mexican hot chocolate. Try it with Mexican vanilla for an even more authentic-feeling experience!
Protein Powder Hot Chocolate?
Absolutely! If you’re wanting more protein in your diet, protein powder is an easy way to get that. Mixed into a delicious treat like Mexican hot chocolate, you’ll have a tasty, toasty treat that’s great for those cold winter nights. Take it along on your next ski trip!
When I first started experimenting, I was worried the powder would clump up and not dissolve well, but that was not the case. The warm liquid easily dissolves the keto protein powder and adds to the thick, creaminess of the drink.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 1 teaspoon cocoa or cacao powder
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- One pinch to 1/4 teaspoon cayenne (to your heat preference)
- 1 tablespoon monkfruit sweetener
- 1 cup keto milk of choice (unsweetened almond or coconut milk are great choices!)
- 1/4 cup of your favorite keto chocolate protein or meal replacement powder
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla (click for Mexican vanilla!)
Instructions
- Add water, cocoa, cinnamon, cayenne, and sweetener to a small saucepan. Place the saucepan over low heat. Stir until the ingredients are dissolved.
- Once dissolved, turn the temperature to medium-high and stir till mixture is boiling. Simmer for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Add milk and protein powder. Over medium heat, whisk just until steam rises from the hot chocolate. Do not simmer or boil (this can make the hot chocolate burn at the bottom of your pan).
- Remove from heat. Add vanilla and stir. Pour into a mug and enjoy!
