I’ve seriously been holding off on making a keto cupcake recipe because I just did not think there could exist a keto cupcake recipe that would actually remind me of a regular cupcake full of sugar.

Love cheesecake, too? Try this keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake.

Welp, I was wrong, so here’s my very first contribution to the keto cupcake world:

Good enough that I totally felt no shame sharing some of these bad boys with my non-keto friends. You all know what I mean.

They loved them!

And my kids (the true test) loved them, too. My tiny little daughter went back for a second cupcake!

Making the Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Frosting

The base on these low carb chocolate PB cupcakes is unique. I combined flax seed with pumpkin, peanut butter, and peanut flour to create a rich, dense cupcake. With sugar free chocolate chips, of course.

(I use Lily’s chocolate chips.)

The peanut butter frosting is mainly butter, peanut butter, and peanut flour. It holds together really well and tastes amazing!

How to Pipe Keto Frosting without Cake Decorating Equipment

When you pipe frosting, you normally need a few pieces of equipment. But really, you don’t.

When I frosted mine, I had to dig around for my cake decorating supplies (the joys of moving—there are some things you’ll never find again!).

I found my tips, but not my bags. So I improvised. I used my big star tip with a plain old plastic storage bag. I just cut a hole in the corner of the bag, stuck the tip in, put the ring over top of that, and then filled the bag with frosting, and voila! Delicious AND good-looking cupcakes!

If you like the winning combo of chocolate and peanut butter, try these Keto Peanut Butter Cups! They have an extra added ingredient to gently aid in keto constipation and are only 1 net carb!

But you don’t even need a tip, either. You can make pretty cupcakes with just a plastic baggie with a corner cut out.

Try it out and see how easy it is to pipe frosting using just a plastic baggie!

Suggestions for Ketogenic Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcakes

  • If you’re having trouble with the consistency of your frosting (too soft), go ahead and put it in the refrigerator for ten minutes or so to stiffen it up. This is especially helpful if you plan on piping it at all.
  • You’ll want to store the cupcakes in the refrigerator or a cool place if you don’t want the frosting to lose its shape. But don’t worry! Leave them on the counter at room temperature for 20 minutes and they’ll soften right up! Although I enjoy biting into the buttery frosting right out of the fridge, too!
  • These cupcakes are rich. I know, it’s keto, and I probably don’t have to remind you. But they’re incredibly filling. When I say my tiny, skinny daughter went back for a second cupcake, what I mean is I was shocked. I can only eat one at a time. So they’d be great as mini cupcakes, too!
  • The sugar free chocolate chips I like to use are Lily’s chocolate chips, but you can also get chocolate chips from ChocZero!
  • I didn’t take any pic of this, but you can also use silicone cupcake cups. I did experiment with my silicone cups for this recipe and they came out beautifully, with no chunks left in the cup.

I didn’t see the nutritional information, I only eat 20 carbs a day so I need to know, I don’t want to go over.

I don’t blame you! I’m currently in the process of revamping the site to include both net and total carbs (since everyone counts carbs differently!). Each recipe post already has the macronutrient counts at the very top before you even scroll to the recipe, but not all of them include both net AND total carbs yet (it’s coming, I promise!). For the cupcakes, it’s 7.6 net carbs per cupcake. You could always make these mini cupcakes or only fill the cupcake tin partwway if you wanted to bring it down more, too. These cupcakes are SO rich, I can generally only eat one anyway before I’m full!

Hi – I’m allergic to flaxseed and wondered if you had a suggested replacement? Maybe an egg? Thanks!

    • Jenn April 27, 2021 at 9:08 am - Reply

I love this question because it really has me thinking! I haven’t had to sub anything for flax meal in baked goods, but I’m going to guess a good replacement would be chia seeds. They have a similar nutritional profile and bind like flax. I can’t guarantee it will work (as I said, I haven’t tried it!), but I would try grinding up chia seeds (you can just use a ninja, bullet, or similar blender–make sure it’s very dry first!). Let me know if it works! I’m super curious about this. Enjoy!

What if I do not have peanut flour? Can I use almond flour same same? Also, is flaxseed the same as flaxseed meal? Excited to try the recipe, I am sure it is very moist with the pumpkin!

I’m so glad you found us! Almond flour and peanut flour are a little different. I haven’t tried subbing almond flour in this recipe, but if you do, please let us know how it goes! Flaxseed meal is made from flaxseed. You can’t use whole flaxseeds for this recipe, but if they’re ground up into meal, you’re good to go!
